Dice, Card and Board Game Collection

  • A school project where the goal was to practice rapid prototyping, game design ideation and packaging it into a playable experience.

  • Dice Game - 4 Weeks

    Card Game - 4 Weeks

    Board Game - 4 Weeks

  • Being the board game and rulebook enthusiast of the team, I was in charge of the technical writing of the rulebook.

Playtesting and Rapid Prototyping

This class was the first foray into a very rapid form of playtesting and prototyping design process. Every week, we would have 2 playtest sessions for our game, as well as playtest other groups’ games. These sessions gave tremendous insight no only from feedback for our game, but also from observing clever and elegant implementation of game mechanics other groups have managed to accomplish.

Rapid prototyping is an essential skill for any game designer. This class was excellent practice for that, as there were many playtest sessions that were going terrible due to a complete imbalance of the game, forcing us to adapt and create or alter rules on the fly as we ran our sessions.

Reflections

Tabletop games present a different challenge compared to digital games. Enforcing rules are harder as there are no omnipotent sources forcing the players to play it the intended way, hence writing the rulebook in clear and succinct language is paramount to a successful play experience.

There were many insights from the playtesting sessions, and filtering feedback to rapidly prototype and adapt the game into a better iteration was challenging but good practice.

Being able to create board games for class was a dream come true. This class was super fun and I had so much fun brainstorming and creative problem solving with my friends to create a finished product. Watching the game idea go from black-and-white printouts to full-colour rulebooks was extremely gratifying and fulfilling.
